Balkh University

Balkh Province

  • Balkh province is located in the northern part of Afghanistan. 
  • There are 15 districts including the capital Mazar-i-Sharif.
  • The population of Balkh is 1,245,100.
  • The governor in Balkh is Atta Muhammad Nur.
  • The main languages spoke there are Dari, Pashto, Turkmen, and Uzbek.
  • The major ethnic groups include Tajiks, Pashtoons then Uzbek, Hazaras, Turkman, Arab and Baluch.
  • Balkh’s law enforcement is controlled by Afghan National Police.
  • Around 66% of population of Balkh lives in rural areas and 34% lives in urban areas.
  • Around 51% of the population is male and 49% is female.
  • Popular sports played are Soccer, Buzkashi or horse riding and Pehlwani.

About Balkh University

Balkh University is located in Mazar-i-Sharif. It's the third largest university in Afghanistan. It was established in 1987 and officially opened its doors the next year with four faculties - Engineering, History and Literature, Economy and Agriculture along with the opening and operation of Medical faculty with 56 students under support of Ministry of Public Health. In 1992 the faculty of Law and Political Science and in 1993 Theology faculty were established. In 2003 the education faculty, known as The Rudaki Pedagogy institute joined the university.  

Currently Balkh University has 15 faculties - Engineering, Economy, Agriculture, Theology, Literature, Computer Science, Journalism, Law, Public Administration, Medical, Education, Education of Samangan, Agriculture of Samangan, Veterinary and Pharmacy. There are also night shift faculties including Economy, Literature and Humanities, Law and Political Science and Education. According to the university's website there are 1274 students, 359 lecturers and 206 administration staff and 104 workers.

Balkh University's campus features an academic library with more than 60000 books and 20 thousand titles. There are six computer labs, one language lab and internet access. 

The university also prints and publishes two scientific journals called “Balkh Scientific Journal” and “Marafat.” There is a monthly newspaper that features culture and analysis of Balkh University. There is also a monthly newspaper from the department of journalism. There are students clubs and sports team like football and volleyball.

Herat University

Herat University is located in Herat City, covering Herat, Badghis, Ghor and Farah Provinces. It was inaugurated in 1988 with with two faculties - Literature and Humanities. There are currently more than 10 000 students and 334 faculty members. The university currently has 14 faculties and 45 departments. The faculties are Engineering, Computer Science, Fine & Arts, Journalism, Literature & Humanities, Economics, Applied Science, Law & political Science, Medicine, Agriculture, Veterinary Science, Public Administration, Theology & Islamic studies and Education.

The university offers degree programs on four campuses within the Herat and three sub Higher Education institutes in Farah, Ghor and Badqis.
