Mathematics at SJSU

Math at SJSU banner

All incoming first-time students attending SJSU must complete their general education Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning course (GE Area B4). However, the math course students are able to enroll in all depends on their major and enrollment category. At SJSU, math courses are categorized by the following pathways:

Please note math enrollment categories are calculated differently for students entering majors that require calculus. Therefore, students intending to pursue a degree in STEM will be evaluated more rigorously to make sure students are prepared for college level calculus and additional mathematics courses at SJSU.

Precalculus Proficiency Assessment (PPA)

Students who have been admitted to SJSU, completed their intent to enroll, and are pursuing a STEM major will receive information about the PPA. Students who do not have particular standardized test scores or the appropriate transferable community college course are highly encouraged to take the PPA. The PPA is a great opportunity for students to test into the appropriate math course with the correct cut score.
