This week, we explore whiteness as a strategic rhetoric that calls into place traditional center-periphery approaches toward the understanding of self, group, and society. While the reading addresses several rhetorical approaches used by the members of a small midwestern community to establish and maintain a sense of cultural homogeneity over a hundred year period, we will also consider the evolving construction of self from a contemporary perspective - studying recent census data that blurs traditional demographic distinctions.
