Imagery, Ideology and Power

We delve further into the relationship of visual communication and the invocation and contestation of ideology. Here, we identify a continuum of approaches that range from Karl Marx and Louis Althusser's articulations of how images serve to perpetuate dominant ways of knowing to Antonio Gramsci and Stuart Hall's examination of how images reflect contradictory value systems and the means to resist social inequities. Turning to the writings of Michel De Certeau, we focus on the power of oppositional readings of visual communication, attending to appropriation, bricolage, and textual poaching.
