Spectatorship, Gaze, and Docile Bodies

We focus our attention to the concept of spectatorship as a means to attain the acquiescence of an individual or group toward ideology. Here we draw initially from psychoanalytical and feminist approaches toward spectatorship, paying particular attention to notion of 'gaze.' How does the gaze invoke power, and can a single notion of gaze account for the varied practices of looking? We conclude with a discussion of institutional and cultural notions of spectatorship, exploring the visual construction of "others."
