Concerted Activities
After months of negotiations, California State University (CSU) has been unable to reach collective bargaining agreements on compensation and other issues with California Faculty Association (CFA) or with Teamsters Local 2010, representing facility services employees. As part of the collective bargaining process, employee unions have the option to strike should there be no agreement after the conclusion of impasse proceedings, or, as is the case, for Teamsters, if the union has filed an unfair labor practice to the state board. The CSU is committed to reaching agreement with CFA and Teamsters as it did with five other unions.

- When will a strike occur?
-
Teamsters Local 2010 has called for a one-day systemwide strike on Tuesday, Nov. 14. The CFA has voted to authorize a strike but has not announced further action.
-
- How many employees could be participating in one-day strike?
-
There are 65 Teamsters/Unit 6 employees at SJSU.
-
- What functions do they perform on campus?
-
These are Skilled Trades: e.g., Carpenters, Painters, Electricians, Plumbers, Mechanics, HVAC, Locksmiths, Power Plant Operators, and Building Engineers.
-
- Will the campus remain open during a strike, or will picketers block access to campus?
-
Yes, campus will be open and operational. Should any changes to hours, services, or events occur, that information will be communicated to the campus community. Individuals who are striking/picketing may not block or otherwise obstruct the ability of students, faculty or staff to access the campus, including classrooms and other facilities and buildings or campus services.
-
- Will areas of campus operations could be disrupted or impacted by one-day work stoppage?
-
It is anticipated that strike activity will occur in and around the 10th Street Garage as well as along San Fernando between 8th and 10th streets; this could create traffic, bicycle or pedestrian disruptions. Access to FD&O's front door along San Fernando may be impacted.
We recognize our skilled trade employees do important work to keep the campus running and have prepared for this action. Some services may be disrupted or delayed but we intend to focus on fire/life and health safety as a first response.FD&O management staff and others will be here to ensure ongoing safety and operation of the campus but, if unforeseen conditions or emergencies arise, there may be need to restrict access to areas until we can fully respond.
-
- Will any services not be delivered?
-
We intend to maintain all services with a focus on high priority response needs in the area of health and safety issues.
-
- Will any vendors be impacted that could affect campus services?
-
Deliveries to campus may be impacted due to strike activities and some vendors or service providers may not respond, but we intend to maintain access for deliveries and our service providers performing safety and health related services for the campus are expected to remain in place.
-
- Are other represented employees participating in the strike?
-
We are not aware of any other CSU union participating in the strike. Many of our other unions have recently reached tentative agreement with the CSU and have collective bargaining agreements in effect that prohibit them from engaging in sympathy strikes.
-
- Am I allowed to speak out publicly about the strike without fear of retaliation?
-
The university fully respects the free speech rights of our students, staff, and faculty. Retaliation from any member of the campus community for one’s personal position regarding the labor dispute is inappropriate and unlawful and should be reported to Julie Paisant (408-924-2255; julie.paisant@sjsu.edu) or Stacey Elsibai (408-924-2142; stacey.elsibai@sjsu.edu)
-
- What is being negotiated?
-
For information on what offers are currently being negotiated, visit the CSU Labor and Employee Relations webpage.
-
- Is the university doing anything to resolve the strike?
-
Negotiations are between the CSU and CFA, and CSU and Teamsters. San José State’s administration does not play a direct role. The CSU system remains committed to bargaining in good faith and reaching agreements with CFA and Teamsters as it has done with five other CSU unions this fall.
-
- How will the university community be updated about potential strike activity?
-
The university will continue to provide updates via sjsu.edu, email and social media accounts.
