Transition Programming

In 2019, the Spartan East Side Promise began to expand into a program within Student Outreach and Recruitment that focuses on helping incoming East Side Union High School District students transition to San José State University, build connections, and navigate the University.

Our Vision is to collaborate with the campus community on interactive, intentional programming to foster academic, personal, and professional development, and a college going mindset, in ESUHSD students.  To do this, we have three objectives:

1 - Help students become part of larger campus community
2 - Serve as a support system for ESUHSD students and their families
3 - Decrease % of academic probation and disqualification in cohort

Newly admitted students - Join us for our SESP Becoming a Spartan Reception!

Monday, March 18, 2024
5:30pm - 6:00pm (doors open, dinner and resource fair begins)
6:00pm - 7:30pm (main program)

Our seventh annual SESP Becoming a Spartan Reception is a FREE event for you and your family/guests. 

At this event, you will have the opportunity to meet other newly admitted Spartans from the East Side Union High School District (ESUHSD).  A special team of SJSU professionals will welcome you to the Spartan community and answer questions that you have regarding the next steps in the enrollment process. Programming will also include important information about: 

• The Spartan East Side Promise Program
• ESUHSD Spartan Summer Program
• SESP Scholarship
• Resources for Parents
• Campus Life and Community
• Admitted Spartan Day 2024: Saturday April 13
• Assistance with Next Steps - Intent to Enrollment process
• And much more….

You can also engage with representatives from multiple departments during our Dinner Resource Fair starting at 5:30pm, with the main event programming beginning at 6:00pm. This is a great space for you to learn more about SJSU and meet and connect with our Spartan team.

ESUHSD Spartan Summer Program

In partnership with the East Side Union High School District and East Side Education Foundation, this hybrid summer program provides incoming ESUHSD Freshmen with academic guidance, connections to campus resources, and an opportunity to build their peer support network. Students will learn how to utilize SJSU's academic advising tools, connect with multiple departments, and build their peer support network. Participants will be eligible to apply for the SESP Scholarship.

Program Dates: June 3 - 6, 2024

Monday, June 3 - Tuesday, June 4th
10:00am -3:00pm at San Jose State University 

Wednesday, June 5 - Thursday, June 6th
10:00am -12:00pm via Zoom 

Program Content

Day 1- The Spartan Experience
Intro to Academics, Campus Tour, Networking and Problem Solving Activities, Career Center, Student Involvement, and more!

Day 2- Balancing Spartan Life
Intro to e-Advising Tools for Class Schedules, Advice from ESUHSD Counselors, Student/Alumni Panel, Resource Fair, and more!

Day 3 & 4 - 1:1 Peer Mentor Meetings
Meet 1:1 with a team member for support via Zoom!

Please note: this program is open only to ESUHSD students newly admitted for Fall 2024.

All ESUHSD students enrolled at SJSU have the opportunity to meet at minimum once a semester with an SESP Peer Mentor to discuss and develop an action plan to work towards students’ personal, academic, and professional goals. SESP Peer Mentors are also available to meet with students as needed by appointment.

As we are not academic advisors, we highly encourage students to meet with an advisor in their College Student Success Center at least once a semester to ensure they are on track to graduate.

• How do I know which College my major belongs to?
  • 1. Log into MySJSU at one.sjsu.edu and click on "My Academics" to confirm your current major under "Plan".
       
       
    2. Go to catalog.sjsu.edu and click on “Majors and Programs”
       
       
    3. On the new page, click “View programs sorted by College”
       
       
    4. Scroll through the list and find your major. Note which College this is listed under

  • View the "College Advising Centers" to see the contact information, websites, and location for each College Student Success Center. 

    If you are Undeclared, please visit the Undergraduate Advising and Success Center.

    For questions specific to your department, refer to the Undergraduate Advising Directory.

• I'm Undeclared but don't know what major I want to declare

  • Meet with your advisor in the Undergraduate Advising and Success Center to explore major options and develop your academic plan, and learn how about Declaring a Major.
