SJS4 for Faculty

SJS4 is the San José State University instance of CalStateS4 (S4) a web-based system for online tracking of student academic placements within the community. It is supported by the Center for Community Engagement (CCE) in the California State University, Office of the Chancellor.

S4 is designed to:

  • Manage risk concerns and requirements associated with off-campus academic placements, and specifically outlined in Executive Orders;
  • Collect reliable and accurate data from CSU campuses about community engagement activities; and
  • Analyze HIPs data from CSU campuses to better understand the impact on student success, graduation and retention rates.

Students and faculty use SJS4 for their courses, to find and place with organizations who have a current University Organization Agreement (UOA) and to request new UOAs. All partners with whom students are placed in curricular service learning placements must have a current UOA per Chancellor's Office Executive Order 1064 and San José State University Senate Policy S16-14 [pdf].

Conducting service learning activities can involve risk. It is important to identify and address potential risks to reduce concerns about liability.

  • It may take over a month to on board a new site depending on how long it takes to have the University-Organization Agreement (UOA) signed.
  • If the agency requests modifications to the UOA, your department works with the agency to identify modifications and submits a SJSU purchase requisition.
