Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Computer Engineering Department (CMPE) at San Jose State!
It is my privilege to be part of the journey of our award-winning students, faculty and staff, as we conduct world-class research, conquer new educational and professional frontiers, and offer transformational experiences to our students on their path to creating their own transformational impact on technology and society.
Computing is becoming increasingly more intertwined in the fabric of society, making the need for software and computer engineering experts more critical than ever. At CMPE, we prepare the future generation of responsible leaders and technologists with deep software and hardware expertise, and specialized skills in AI, cybersecurity, robotics, and complex systems. At a time of rapid technological change driven by developments in generative AI, it is critical to introduce students to cutting-edge technologies while separating hype and transient trends from the foundational problem-solving and engineering skills they need to succeed. Our focus is on teaching durable skills that enable our students to successfully navigate technology revolutions, adapt to change, and thrive in their careers for years to come.
Our programs and initiatives are supported by millions of dollars of federal and industry funding for technical research, student success and curriculum development initiatives, obtained by our faculty through highly competitive award processes. In addition, our location and strong applied focus enable us to benefit from close collaborations across the Silicon Valley ecosystem, including having industry leaders teaching and advising students along with our full-time faculty, students engaging in internships in the Bay Area, and faculty research and curriculum development collaborations with tech companies, non-profits, and government entities such as the San Jose Mayor’s office, where we can make direct impact on our local communities.
CMPE students continuously reach new heights, winning programming competitions, hackathons, and best paper awards at research conferences, contributing to clubs, mentoring others, and volunteering outside the classroom. I can’t wait to see what they will accomplish next!
