Bio
Dr. Johnny Carlos Ramirez (he/his/el) is an Assistant Professor in Chicana and Chicano Studies at San Jose State University (SJSU). Before arriving at SJSU, Dr. Ramirez, also known as “Profe Johnny,” served as an IRISE postdoctoral fellow at the University of Denver (DU) and as a teaching professor in their Critical Race & Ethnic Studies (CRES) program. He is a first-generation transfer student who grew up in the low-income barrios of the San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empire. Dr. Ramirez’s research examines how to use social justice youth development programs as prevention/intervention strategies to dismantle the school-to-prison nexus and prevent high pushout/dropout rates for Chicana/o/x youth.
Over the past 20 years, Profe Johnny has worked in youth development programs as a
program director, mentor, youth organizer, and community activist. Profe Johnny’s
work as an activist and scholar reflects his deep commitment to social justice issues.
He has dedicated his life to empowering students of color to realize their power and
develop the leadership skills necessary to build a movement for transformative change.
Profe Johnny's interests are rooted in learning about diverse cultural spaces that
reflect artistic and political expressions. He loves attending community events, cultural
celebrations, and ceremonies highlighting diverse languages, food, dance, and music.
His hobbies include going to concerts, the theater, lowrider car shows, DJing, creating
hip hop music, and bike riding at the beach at sunset.
