Gus Lease Junior Scholarship
Dr. Gus Lease taught music for 66 years in the School of Music and Dance, in SJSU's College of Humanities and Arts. Even after his retirement and appointment as Professor Emeritus, he continued teaching in the School of Music and Dance as well as the Department of History. Gus raised many Spartan spirits with his rousing renditions of the University's alma mater “Hail, Spartans Hail,” along with the national anthem, throughout his career. These included performances as a vocal soloist at 63 homecoming football games and 65 commencement ceremonies. Devoted to The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Dr. Lease served as President of our Chapter #067 in 1974-1975 and again from 2003-2015.

Anna Lambourne Scholarship
Anna Lambourne was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi when she was a student at San José State, where she earned a BA with honors in Russian and French in 1974 at the age of 58. Born in Vladivostok, Russia (December 3, 1915), she witnessed the Russian Revolution and fled with her family to grow up in Shanghai, China. She lived there as a Prisoner of War during World War II and married her husband of 48 years - US Army Captain Alfred "Freddie" Lambourne - in 1946. Her partner in Lambourne Realty, they made a grand dance pair whenever the music started. Anna held a variety of jobs during her life, including positions with the Palace Hotel and Stanford's Hoover Library, and launched her singing career in 2006 with Ree Ree Bruno in the jazz combo headed by Bob Phillips. Later in life, at the age of 94, she founded the Lambourne Institute to promote the education of children from birth before passing away in 2017 at the age of 101.
About the Scholarship
Funded by a generous bequest from Mrs. Lambourne's estate, our chapter has decided to award a $2,000 scholarship in her name to an outstanding "returning student" who is being initiated into PKP at our annual ceremony this spring. In honor of Ms. Lambourne’s devotion to life-long learning, Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 067 awards an annual $2000 scholarship to a “returning” student. A returning student is defined as a student who continued his or her education after a break of several years or more.
The scholarship will be applied toward student fees for the 2024 - 2025 academic year. Half of the money will be applied to each of the fall and spring semesters. Therefore, the recipient must be enrolled for the entire 2024–2025 academic year for at least 6 units each term.
