Higher Education Teaching CertificateThe fully online Teacher Librarian program focuses on the skills you need for professional employment in K-12 school libraries, including collaboration, instructional strategies in information literacy and digital literacy, school leadership, and program administration. 31 units to complete this program.
The Teacher Librarian program prepares you for professional employment in K-12 school libraries. If you already hold a valid single or multiple-subject credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) you will be eligible to apply for your Teacher Librarian Services Credential in California. (If you are located outside California you are advised to check with your state’s Department of Education.)

NCATE-accredited coursework
The Teacher Librarian program coursework is approved by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and meets the requirements for the California Teacher Librarian Services Credential.
Field experience capstone course
As a Teacher Librarian student, you will complete a school field experience course, where you will work in elementary and secondary school library settings. Emphasis is on observation and guided practice with a credentialed school librarian (library media teacher)
Teacher-Librarianship and MLIS
You have the option to earn a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science by completing just four additional courses (12 units).

Careers in teacher librarianship vary from small organizations with a single teacher librarian to complex organizations embedded within larger institutions providing services to thousands of students.

As a Teacher Librarian student, you can also earn your Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree by completing 12 additional units. MLIS degree graduates are qualified for additional career opportunities outside of K-12.
