San José State’s Master of Science in Transportation Management (MSTM) program, partnered with the Mineta Transportation Institute, is a one-of-a-kind degree program available fully online. Classes are held live online in the evenings.
This flexible degree enables you to keep your career while deepening your knowledge of the transportation field. You will be exposed to different transportation disciplines, such as planning, finance, and the environment, all while looking at industry trends.

Fellowship opportunities
The Mineta Transportation Institute has supported MSTM students with close to $1 million in fellowships since the program began. Enrolled students are eligible to apply. For more information, visit the program site.
Convenient learning
Students take one course per session for a total of four courses a year. Classes are offered in the evening, so working professionals can fit them in with their schedules. Classes are delivered fully online.
Real-world exposure
SJSU’s partnership with Mineta Transportation Institute exposes students to transportation research and the issues within the transportation system. The curriculum is led by nationally recognized instructors who are both academics and industry experts.
MSTM partnerships
The Mineta Transportation Institute, in partnership with SJSU and the California State University Transportation Consortium, currently has 58 projects in research and 79 research projects published. Students of MTI have the opportunity for practical experience to help create a more connected world.
Career Opportunities
Transportation jobs are essential and are predicted to grow by 9% between 2020-2030, adding 1.1 million jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Transportation remains the largest source of U.S.-based carbon emissions, and reducing emissions from this source continues to be a challenge. SJSU MSTM grads continue to contribute to the essential task of developing, managing, and creating sustainable ways to move people and goods.
- SJSU grads work in management positions for companies like Caltrans, Facebook, LA Metro, San Diego MTS, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), and other public and private sectors.
- Some companies may offer tuition reimbursement for career advancement.
- The transportation industry covers a number of different fields. According to USNEWS, Civil Engineers are listed as the #1 engineering job and make the list of the top 100 jobs.
- Logisticians are listed in USNEWS as the #8 best business job, and the projected employment growth from 2020-2030 is 29.5% according to the Bureau of Labor
- Indeed.com put together a list of transportation jobs to explore and notes that it’s a great industry for growth and career advancement.
