About Us

San Jose State University (SJSU) has received a five-year, five-million-dollar grant from the department of education to increase the retention and graduation rates of Hispanic and low-income (LI) students earning degrees in engineering and computer science. Partnering with San Jose City College (SJCC) and Gavilan Community College (Gavilan), SJSU aims to work collectively to increase the number of Hispanic and LI students attaining degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through research opportunities, internships, outreach programs, transfer pathways, and faculty workshops.

The 5 Activities

Activity 1. Implementation of engineering undergraduate research opportunities at SJSU, SJCC, and Gavilan.

Activity 2. Expansion of the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Engineering Program at SJSU and Gavilan and development of a MESA program at SJCC.

Activity 3. Faculty Development for Student Success of Hispanic and LI Students.

Activity 4. Development of model transfer and articulation agreements between SJSU and the two community college partners: SJCC and Gavilan.

Activity 5. Outreach and collaboration efforts with industry and community colleges.

Our Goals

• Goal 1

  • Achieve target retention and graduation rates for Hispanic and LI engineering and computer science students.

• Goal 2

  • Increase the number of Hispanic and LI engineering and computer science students in grant-funded services or programs in good academic standing or obtaining a degree.

• Goal 3

  • Expansion of MESA at SJSU and Gavilan and development of a MESA program at SJCC for Hispanic and LI freshmen.

• Goal 4

  • Documentation and development of model transfer pathways data analysis.
