Digital Accessibility Essentials

This workshop series from the Center for Faculty Excellence and Teaching Innovation (CFETI) introduces faculty to digital content accessibility and essential skills for creating accessible course content. The series combines fifteen-minute webinars with an asynchronous Canvas course to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to create accessible online learning environments and course materials. This series includes a stipend that requires participation in the webinars and completion of the Canvas assignments. Digital Accessibility Essentials: A Quick-Start for Course Content and Design

The series is structured around five micro-webinars, each paired with additional information and a practical assignment in Canvas:

Webinar 1: Accessible Documents - March 19, 2026, 2:00 - 2:15pm

Focuses on best practices for Word, PowerPoint, and PDF documents, covering content structure (headings and lists), high-contrast colors, avoiding color as the sole conveyer of information, and accessible tables.

Webinar 2: Accessible Multimedia - March 26, 2026, 2:00-2:15 pm

Covers how to produce accessible video and audio content by utilizing tools like Panopto for captions, editing machine-generated captions for accuracy, and writing descriptions of visual content.

Webinar 3: Accessible Images  - April 16, 2026, 2:00-2:15 pm

Instructs on writing effective alternative text (Alt Text) and long descriptions for visual content, including leveraging AI generators and creating Alt Text in platforms like Google, Office, Acrobat, and Canvas.

Webinar 4: Accessibility in Canvas: Accessibility in Canvas - April 22, 2026, 1:00-1:15 pm

Details how to make a Canvas course accessible, specifically addressing heading structure, lists, colors, images, icons, and links.

Webinar 5: Testing for Accessibility - May 7, 2026, 1:00-1:15 pm

Explores assistive technologies (such as screen readers) and accessibility checkers (Docs, Slides, Acrobat, UDOIT). It also covers how AI can enhance content creation, captioning, and generating accessible HTML, along with SJSU-specific resources.
