Industry Partners

The Silicon Valley Big Data and Cybersecurity Center (BDCC) at San José State University invites companies and organizations to collaborate in advancing innovation, education and research in big data and cybersecurity. We aim to address the most pressing challenges in these fast-evolving industries and offer a variety of partnership opportunities, fostering joint efforts to drive impact and create real-world solutions.

Areas of Collaboration

We are actively seeking partnerships to engage in the following activities:

  • Form an academic-industry consortium
  • Develop training programs
  • Recruit talent and expertise
  • Build a consulting platform
  • Participate in research and publications
  • Generating funding proposals

Collaborative Events and Networking Opportunities

The BDCC regularly hosts events that bring together students, faculty and industry leaders. Our flagship event, CyberAware Day, for example, is held annually during National Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week in partnership with Ohlone College.

In 2019, we welcomed executives from OKTA, TrendMicro, Oath, Sumologic, etc. Despite shifting to a virtual format in 2020, CyberAware Day continues to thrive with speakers from leading organizations like Trend Micro, ServiceNow and Palo Alto Networks. These events provide invaluable opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing, and exploring the latest trends and developments in cybersecurity.

Collaborating Across SJSU

In addition to industry collaborations, we work closely with other centers and units at SJSU to expand our capabilities and serve our students and community. Examples include:

  • The Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI), an organized research and training unit within the Lucas College and Graduate School of Business, increases mobility for all by improving the safety, efficiency, accessibility, and convenience of our nation’s transportation system. MTI leads four competitively selected multi-university consortia focused on improving the mobility of people and goods and is home to the National Transportation Security Center which receives funding from the US Department of Homeland Security.

  • The Silicon Valley Digital Forensics Laboratory was established in 2022 by Drs. Bryce Westlake and Michelle Rippy. Its primary objective is to prepare an ethnic- and gender-diverse digital forensics workforce with the critical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership skills necessary to be successful in entry-level positions. This is accomplished through community outreach, cyber education initiatives and year-long internships. Through these experiences, students engage in hands-on, experiential learning by acquiring evidence from digital devices from ongoing criminal and non-criminal investigations, educating their community about cyber threats, and mentoring the next generation of digital forensics technicians.

  • The Virtual Environments, Cognition, and Training Research (VECTR) Lab at SJSU was established in 2013 by Dr. David Schuster. Members of the VECTR Lab work to improve human-machine system performance and safety in complex work settings. Research in the lab focuses on accelerating cybersecurity workforce development, understanding cybersecurity professional expertise, and empowering individuals to be safer online. The lab also investigates human-automation interaction in emerging AI and robotics systems and works to increase diverse participation and achievement in STEM careers. Through the lab, students across colleges develop skills in interdisciplinary research supporting human aspects of cybersecurity.
