Probation

Academic probation is a serious matter; it is the first step of disqualification, which could result in you leaving SJSU. If you find yourself on academic probation, try to get out as soon as you can.

Probation FAQ

• Under what circumstance will I be placed on probation?

  • You will be put on academic probation by the university if your overall GPA falls below 3.0.

    Once on academic probation, graduate students are subject to disqualification if they fail to earn an SJSU term GPA of 3.0 or better each semester until they re-establish an SJSU cumulative GPA of 3.0.

    Students with a GPA below 3.0 must make an appointment with a Graduate Advisor immediately.

• Under what circumstance will I be disqualified?

  • You will be disqualified from the program if you are on probation and fail to achieve a semester GPA above 3.0.

• I just got disqualified. How can I establish a petition for reinstatement?

  • Obtain the Graduate Petition for Reinstatement form and see the department chairperson. The EE Department will process reinstatement requests with limited options.

• Does the “grade forgiveness” policy apply to Graduate EE students?

  • No, courses taken and grades of all course attempts must remain on the record and be averaged, even if you repeat the class.

• I completed all courses and units required for the MSEE degree but my overall GPA is still below 3.0. What should I do?

  • See the university catalog section about Academic Standing and make an appointment to meet with the Department Chair as soon as possible.
