Ian Castro
Graduate Student Instructor

Ian Castro is a graduate student in the Master of Information Management and Systems
program at the UC Berkeley School of Information. He graduated from Berkeley in 2021
with a B.A. in Media Studies and a B.S. in Microbial Biology. His focus is on increasing
accessibility, diversity, and equity within the information sciences, particularly
for non-majors and those without prior experience in computing. Through the Division
of Computing, Data Science, and Society, he has taught and designed introductory coursework
and academic programs, such as Introduction to Data Science for Graduate Students
and Data Scholars Foundations. Currently, he is teaching Data 6: Introduction to Computational
Thinking with Data for a summer bridge program designed to bring Python coding to
historically marginalized students interested in pursuing graduate degrees in STEM.
