Eligibility Requirements

The program is open to undergraduate students enrolled in SJSU Lucas College of Business.  Currently enrolled students and students who have graduated the May or December prior to the program are eligible to apply.

Requirements to apply:

• 3.5 overall SJSU GPA.
• Completion of most of the following upper division classes prior to departure: BUS 100W, BUS 130, BUS 140, BUS 160, BUS 170, and BUS 187. The more you have completed, the stronger your application.
• A valid passport extending at least through December 31 of the year of the summer internship.
• Non-US citizens must have a valid green card or visa that will allow re-entry to the US when returning from the program.
• Recommendation letter from SJSU faculty on your suitability for a company internship at an international location. The recommendation letter should be emailed by the instructor to singmay.chou@sjsu.edu. 

DO NOT WAIT to get your passport and visa documents: Applicants must upload a valid passport with the required validity date during the application process in January. Students without this documentation during the application process will not be considered.  

In addition, a visa may be required to enter the country where your project is taking place. It is possible that visa requirements will prevent you from participating. This depends on where the project will be, where your passport is from and when we find out from Crown where the projects will be. We will help you apply for the appropriate visa if you are accepted into the program.

Participants are selected based on academic performance and qualifications for the specific projects.  As with any job application, write a cover letter and customize your resume to highlight the skills and experience that make you the best choice for a particular project.

FAQs

• What can I do to improve my chances of being selected? 

  • Keep your grades up! Demonstrate your soft skills in class, with your professors and in the TGIP interview if you are selected. Make sure your essay is thoughtful, personal and well-written. Make sure your passport has at least 6 months of validity after the end of your internship in July. If you are an international student or your passport is not from the US (e.g., you have a Green card) see the answer below with special instructions for this situation.

• How many projects are there and how are they chosen?

  • Crown selects the projects based on their business needs. The number of projects, the specific project objectives and the project locations are determined by Crown. The number of projects has ranged from 1 to 4.

• How many students are selected each time?

  • Typically 6-8 interns are selected based on 2 to 3 projects defined by Crown.

• When are the projects (subject and location) announced?

  • Generally Crown will let us know in the spring.  Typically, the application process is completed before we know any details about the projects. We strongly encourage you to apply (and participate, if you are accepted) without knowing exactly what the projects will be—it’s a fabulous opportunity no matter what.  In the recent past all interns go to the same location.  In the earlier years of the program interns were assigned to different locations, but this has not been the practice recently.  

• Am I still eligible if I have graduated (or will) just prior to the internship? 

  • If you graduate in May or December, you are eligible for the June internships immediately following your graduation. 

• What documents do I have to have to be able to go?

  • Your passport must be valid for “long enough” after the program. Some countries require that your passport be valid for 90 days after your return from the country. 6 months is recommended. If you’re even thinking about this program, check now that there is sufficient time left on your passport and, if not, going ahead with renewing it (or applying for a passport in the first place if you don’t already have one).
    A visa may be required to enter the country where your project is taking place. It’s possible that visa requirements will prevent you from participating. This depends on where the project will be, where you are from when we find out from Crown where the projects will be. We will help you apply for the appropriate visa if you are accepted into the program.

• What about insurance?

  • All SJSU students traveling abroad are required to purchase the University’s health insurance policy. This expense will be reimbursed by the TGIP. 

• What if my passport is not from the US? Are international students eligible?

  • Yes, international students ARE welcome to apply for the TGIP program on the same basis as other students. The passport and visa requirements are the same for everyone, but it may be more difficult and time-consuming to get visas for non-US passport holders. In addition, you should check that your documentation to re-enter the US is valid for the necessary time period.

• What will it cost me to participate in the program? 

  • The program will pay for your airfare, accommodation and provide a per diem to cover daily living expenses. You will need to pay for most sightseeing/entertainment (Crown will provide some activities), meals if you overspend your allowance, and shopping. You will be paid a salary, but may not see it in your bank account before you return home.

• Can I extend my stay? 

  • We do our best to allow you to extend your stay if you wish to do so. We can’t promise, but so far we have always been able to work this out. Of course, this is at your expense.
