The award-winning Composition program, led by Dr. Pablo Furman, provides one of the most diverse offerings in California, including acoustic composition in all genres, computer and electro-acoustic composition, recording technologies, and film scoring.
SJSU’s many Instrumental Performing Ensembles welcome both music majors and general students. Instrumental performance opportunities include Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Orchestra, Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble, jazz combos, chamber music, Spartan Pep Band, and the famous Spartan Marching Band.
The Music Education program at SJSU has produced some of California's leading educators, scholars, and administrators. Owing to the quality of the Music Education program—focusing on social justice, urban educational settings, the ability to serve diverse communities authentically—students completing the Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree from SJSU are sought by school districts across the country! In fact, the School of Music consistently receives many more requests for certified teachers than it is able to accommodate.
Annual merit-based scholarships totaling over $250,000 per year are awarded to gifted music majors. Further information for undergraduates may be found under scholarships.
