Incident: Phone Scam Update

Since the initial Community Advisory alert was sent, UPD has learned that these calls have also been made to non affiliates.

UPD's service provider is currently leading the investigation along with UPD assisting.  Both agencies hope to have this resolved in a timely manner.  Updates will be provided when available.

Anyone who may have information related to this incident should contact the University Police Department at (408) 924-2222. Remember to be aware of your surroundings. Get to a safe place and immediately report emergencies and suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1, using bluelight or elevator phones on campus or by calling (408) 924-2222. Please note that while UPD works with external agencies to stay informed of incidents that occur in areas close to SJSU campuses, there may be occasions when UPD is not made aware of particular incidents. Suspect descriptions are included in safety advisories only when deemed appropriate and if the descriptors provided to police could reasonably lead to conclusive identification of the alleged perpetrator(s). If UPD has access to a photo of the suspect(s) it may be attached to this message. This is not an Emergency Notification or Timely Warning as defined in the Clery Act.

Incident: Phone scam impersonating law enforcement

The University Police Department has received multiple reports from affiliates who have been contacted by individuals impersonating UPD officers. These scammers used caller ID spoofing to make it appear as though their calls were coming from the University Police Department's official number, (408) 924-2222. During these calls, the impersonators claimed to be from the "Internet Complaints Department of UPD" and falsely asserted that personal information had been compromised and required the call recipient to call China to resolve the issue.

The UPD is currently working with telecommunications service providers to investigate and resolve the issue and will provide an update once the situation is resolved. If you or someone you know has received similar calls, please contact the University Police Department at (408) 924-2222 or visit us at 377 South 7th Street, in front of the South Parking Garage. Please note that while the number (408) 924-2222 will not appear on caller ID when UPD places outgoing calls, UPD officials will still always identify themselves by name and provide valid local contact information for follow-up. They will never demand money or ask you to call another country.
