**Graduation Application Format**
The Office of the Registrar will not accept paper applications or major forms for students graduating Fall 2022 or later. Please follow the online graduation process.

This page gives an overview of the graduation process and the steps you need to take apply.

Eligibility for Graduation:

Before applying for graduation, you verify that you meet the following criteria:

  • Earned at least 85 units. Note that you may count a maximum of 70 units from community colleges.
  • Have good academic standing (being on probation is fine)
  • Be able to complete all degree requirements within one or two semesters

In addition, you should:

  • Confirm you have completed all GE and SJSU Studies requirements on MySJSU.
  • Review all expected transfer credits.  Contact to report any discrepancies.
  • Ensure that you have declared all majors and minors.
  • Verify your name, mailing address, and email address on MySJSU.

Application Deadlines

In the term that you wish to graduate, we must receive online applications no later than the last day to add classes. If your college follows the paper process, we must receive the application by the last day of instruction.

Be proactive. If you submit your application by the dates shown below, you will receive priority class registration.

Please follow the instructions from your college to apply for graduation.  Some colleges have earlier internal deadlines relevant to graduation.

If you miss the application deadline, please contact an advisor from your college success center.

How to Apply

  • The Office of the Registrar will not accept paper applications or major forms for students graduating Fall 2022 or later. Please follow the online graduation process.
  • Check with your major department and follow their internal process to apply for graduation.
  • Learn more about the two graduation application formats. Most majors use the online process, while others still use the paper process.
  • If you have a minor, you must submit a signed minor form.
  • For additional questions at any point in the process, contact your graduation evaluator.

Graduation Status in MyProgress

Your graduation status in MySJSU should have one of four values. If your status is blank, you are not yet eligible to apply.

Application Review Process

  1. Office of the Registrar receives your application
  2. Your Graduation Evaluator will review your application for degree requirements:
    • MyProgress report has the requirements for online applicants
    • Major Form has the requirements for paper/hybrid applicants

  3. Your evaluator will send a confirmation email to your SJSU address. 
    • Paper applicants will receive a graduation worksheet in the email
    • Online applicants will refer to their MyProgress report
    • The email and/or worksheet will list any deficiencies or issues
    • Follow the instructions in the email/worksheet
    • If you have substitutions or exceptions, please contact your major advisor

  4. If you have not heard from your evaluator within three months, please contact them directly.

After Applying

  • After you have applied for graduation and your evaluator has reviewed your record, your Graduation Status on MySJSU will change to "Needs to finish pending work". This status will remain until we award your degree.
  • If you have taken or are currently taking coursework at another institution, please submit official transcripts that shows final grades as soon as possible. SJSU accepts official electronic transcripts. Use the email address. 
  • Make sure each of your GPAs are 2.0 or higher. 
  • Review MyProgress each semester to make sure it is accurate.  Students who received a graduation worksheet should follow those requirements.  Review the Graduation Worksheet Guide [pdf] to help interpret your worksheet.
  • Resolve any I (incomplete) and RD (report delayed) grades
  • Clear up outstanding Study Abroad coursework
  • Clear any holds that may be on your record

If you will not complete your degree requirements by the end of your planned semester, you must change your graduation date.

Your Final Semester

Students must complete all outstanding coursework by the last day of the instruction. See this checklist to help ensure you are on track for graduation.
