About COACHE at SJSU
San José State University is participating in the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey to better understand faculty experiences and to strengthen the conditions that support faculty success.
COACHE is a national faculty survey administered by the Harvard Graduate School of Education. It is used by hundreds of colleges and universities to assess key dimensions of faculty work life: teaching, research, service, mentoring, leadership, shared governance, and institutional climate. Participation allows SJSU to compare our faculty experiences with those at peer and aspirational institutions, while still centering local context and priorities.
At SJSU, COACHE is grounded in our commitment to shared governance, institutional excellence, and continuous improvement. The survey provides faculty with a structured opportunity to share perspectives on what is working well and where improvement is needed. These insights help inform campus dialogue, planning, and decision-making.
SJSU first administered COACHE in 2019, and the current administration builds on that foundation. Engaging in COACHE affirms that faculty voices at SJSU are essential to advancing our mission as California’s founding public university. The COACHE survey is a tool that supports thoughtful, collaborative efforts to improve faculty work life and institutional effectiveness.
