About Us

Operated by SJSU's Department of Kinesiology in cooperation with the County of Santa Clara, the Timpany Center is an accessible physical activity and therapeutic recreation center.

Originally dedicated in September of 1979 in the memory of Dr. C. Russell Timpany, County Superintendent of Schools, the center was designed to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities. Today, Timpany Center boasts a 100,000 gallon warm-water pool, spa, gymnasium, weight room, classroom, and research lab.

Timpany Needs Your Support!

We are reaching out today to ask for your support by participating in our 2024 fundraising drive to help our community grow and thrive. Although we are under the auspices of SJSU Research Foundation in partnership with Santa Clara County, our program is self supported. This means that we are not subsidized by either SJSU or the County. While the County supports the physical facility and SJSU supports the internet and cyber infrastructure, all other needs (including salaries and equipment) are generated via program registrations and membership income.
The mission  of the Timpany Center is to provide recreational experiences for a community that fosters adaptability, inclusion, support, education, and respect through the use of innovative programs and specialized services. We are guided by equity and compassion by offering opportunity and advocating for accessibility in order to cultivate a more inclusive society for every individual to thrive while upholding integrity and professionalism throughout.
Housing a 100,000 gallon warm water, zero entry therapy pool, adapted land fitness center and other activity spaces, the Timpany Center caters to a wide variety of residents from Santa Clara County and beyond. Programs such as swim lessons, water and land fitness classes,  personal training and on site physical therapy provide access to individuals who may be experiencing disability, mobility issues, advanced age or other health conditions that would require specialized equipment, facilities and staff.
Our goal is to raise $50,000 by the end of the year. With these funds, our plan is to upgrade water wheelchairs and walkers as well as add other locker room amenities such as swimsuit spinners, a bariatric scale and new padded changing tables. We will also be using these funds to enhance our scholarship program which pays for full or partial membership/classes for those in financial need.
