Bio

Manel is an assistant professor of journalism and mass communications at San Jose State University, a former journalist, and a scholar interested in the interactions between politics and journalism with a special interest on Spanish language media and Latin America.

Dr. Palos-Pons favors the facilitation of participatory and creative educational environments to elicit critical perspectives on the media. In his courses, journalism and media organizations are considered essential institutions to develop fully diverse, inclusive and democratic societies. Among Manel’s more immediate plans is the creation of a program centered on Spanish language media journalism and markets.

Manel earned his PhD in Communication at UC San Diego in 2022, and his current research is focused on the conflictive but productive relationship between populism and journalism. Manel has published his work in prestigious venues such as the International Journal of Communication and presented his research in many revered academic institutions, such as the International Journal of Press and Politics Conference at the University of Oxford, the International Communication Association annual conference, or the Postman Conference at NYU Steinhardt.

Before coming to California, Manel worked as a reporter in Spain, and as a journalist and editor in Mexico.
