Spartan Daily wins 27 awards in Greater Bay Area Journalism Awards competition
The Spartan Daily took home 27 awards at this year's San Francisco Press Club Greater Bay Area Journalism Awards gala, held Wednesday night in San Francisco. This was by far the most of any campus newspaper in the competition. The Daily took 10 first place awards, 13 second places and four third places.
Alicia Alvarez took three awards, winning first place for Best News Story and second for Best Column and Best News Photo. Alina Ta also took three awards, with first place for Best Breaking News Story, second place for Best Photo Series and third place for Best News Story. Irene Milanez took first place for Best Feature Photo and second for Best Photo Series, while Tracy Escobedo took first place for both Best Cover Design and Best Feature Layout Design. Alexia Frederickson also won two awards, taking second place for Best Feature Story/Serious Subject and sharing second place for Best Photo Series.
The Daily took second place for Best Campus Newspaper, with editors Matthew Gonzalez, Jillian Darnell, Nathan Canilao and Alessio Cavalca honored. Bojana Cvijic took first place for Best Investigative Story, while Joanna Chavez shared first place honors for Best Cover Design. Brandon Nicolas took first place for Best Feature Story/Light Subject, Dylan Newman won first place for Best News Photo, and Carolyn Brown shared first place for Best Breaking News Story.
Bryanna Bartlett and Myenn Rahnoma shared second place awards for Best Feature Layout Design, while Maya Benmokhtar took second place for Best Sports Photo. Cia Castro and Cammy Tan shared third place for Best Cover Design, and the late Jeremy Martin took third place for Best Column.
This is quite a haul for our little newspaper. While the Greater Bay Area Journalism Awards is a regional competition, not the statewide or national contests the Daily has been entering in recent years, it's always gratifying to see our students' hard work recognized. Please join me in congratulating the Daily staff, and in continuing to support all our student media.
